Preparing your quilt for Longarming

BACKING FABRIC

Please supply your own backing fabric and ensure it is at least 3”-4” inches bigger on all sides that your quilt top (Directional fabric- if you join two drops horizontally the fabric design will be sideways across the back of the quilt, if the two drops are joined vertically the pattern of the fabric will be correctly orientated).

Please call if you need help calculating how much fabric you will need.

WADDING

As with the backing fabric, if you provide wadding it needs to be 3”-4” inches larger all round than the quilt top.
I do stock a selection of quality waddings for you to choose from.

BINDING FABRIC

If you require a binding service please provide the fabric but don’t worry about constructing the binding as I will do this.

LOOSE THREADS

For pale fabrics please snip off any loose threads at the back to prevent them showing through at the front.

STAY STITCHING

Please do a stay stitch around the quilt top at the very edge to prevent seams opening and fraying

NO EMBELLISHMENTS

Avoid adding beads, buttons, sequins or other embellishments until after the quilt is complete

LAYERS

If providing backing and wadding, keep all three layers separate, do not glue, pin or tack them together

PRESSING

No need to press your quilt top, I will handle this before loading it onto the frame.

SPRAY ADHESIVE

If you’ve used spray adhesive the wadding may need to be replaced as the stickiness will affect stitch quality.

MARK THE TOP

If you’re sending the quilt in by post please pin a note to the quilt denoting which is the top.

THREAD & PATTERNS

When you visit you’ll have the chance to select from a variety of beautiful thread colours and quilt patterns to perfectly complement your project.
